PC Troubleshooting Advice

Post Your Computer Related Problems here

Although sometimes I might not be able to solve your issue I can probably point you in the right direction.

FAQ:

My laptop is hot even when not doing anything:

First Download and Run
HWMonitor to check if it is really hot internally.
Also a hot laptop can result in sluggish gaming performance as the computer detect high internal temperature and attempts to reduce performance to reduce the temperature increase.

Hot CPU/
GPU Possible Solutions:

  • Download Acer Fan Control and decrease the temperature for the Fan to Activate so the fan will spin more often to bring down the temperatures.
  • For advance users
  1. If you have sent it for repairs open it up and replace the thermal paste using a better brand like Arctic MX2 the technician probably didn't replace the thermal paste when they dissembled it.
  2. Replace the default thermal pads and thermal paste to a high quality type such as Arctic Cooling MX-2 or Arctic Silver 5 after dissembling the laptop.
  3. Run Acer Fan Control Utility while gaming.
  4. Tear away the air filter at the bottom of the laptop to allow better air flow (I did this)
  5. UnderVolt your Processor

Hot
GPU only Possible Solution:

Acer Aspire 4530WebCam shows nothing:

WebCam solution
  • Use the Bison AP Driver the SuYin one is really problematic and the Bison Driver Work on the WebCams and try to make sure the webcam cable is not too taut.

Driver Error Messages:

Possible Solutions:

  • Search and Update Display Drivers (Check What Graphics Card you possess)
  1. For Nvidia GFX card use Nvidia Driver or use this Universal Recent Nvidia Driver don't worry about stability as Nvidia Drivers are always very stable even the Beta Ones
Enhance Your Laptop Experience:

Encounter Weird Laptop Behaviour:

Hardware Reset:
  • Remove all power sources including Battery and AC Adapter.
  • Press and Hold Power Button for 60 Seconds.
  • Turn on Computer.

Possible Solutions:
PLEASE FLASH YOUR BIOS ONLY WHEN YOU NEED THE FIX, DO NOT HAPPILY FLASH WHEN YOU LIKE IT ACCIDENTS CAN OCCUR.

Need to Recover Preloaded Acer Disk Image:

  • Try to recover it first by holding Down Alt-F12 on Boot (With D2D Recovery Enabled in BIOS (F2)) if it doesn't work follow this
I installed Vista myself but get a Blue Screen of Death if I selected AHCI Mode in BIOS

I want to install Windows Xp in AHCI mode but Windows Xp cannot detect Disk Driver when BIOS is in AHCI mode
Solution
If you encounter Blue Screen Of Death, note the error messages + Check the Event Viewer logs and post the offending files below. If the BSOD occurs randomly it can be due to damaged RAM.
Run memtest86 to test for faulty RAM.(Press F8 in Vista to select Memtest86 test)

Wireless Not Detected Properly.
  • Make sure you install the launch manager with the wireless driver.
  • The launch manager switch is tied to the wireless card operation.

Graphics Performance depends on RAM since it is integrated
My Harddisk is WD BEVT 320GB
What I did
1)Use 185.20 Drivers
2)Install Nforce Driver from Nvidia website (latest)
3)Update DirectX

For those people who are interested in Acer Aspire 4530,
I like to point out some behavioral quirks in this system.
1)WebCam blank (fixed by my blog post. Problem has yet to reoccur since)
2)Noisy fan when system is under load. This keeps the system cool.
Solution:
A pair of headphones and Windows Media Player
3)Unplugging battery and AC Line causes the system to be unable to keep time
Temporary Solution:Keep the battery pack in the laptop and bear with it
5)Upgrading to 1.3335 BIOS version causes System to power up and shutdown before booting up normally
Solution:Stick to BIOS version 1.3334 instead

Another Acer Aspire 4530 design fault discovered:
The Center bottom of the LCD screen does not bond well to the Casing due to the thermal plastic deform cause by the LCD Power Unit located inside the casing
No severity issues just an eye sore

Weinter said...

You can try the CUDA Development Driver I put up.
Sure work, because Nvidia stated for all Notebooks.

For those having heat issue you might want to elevate the laptop exhaust or try the fan utility I put up. Also try to flash to the latest stable BIOS Version 1.3334.

Hi i juz got my 4530 2 weeks ago but only notice your site last week:( anyway, im using this site for more info on my lappy. My setup is AMD Athlon 64x2 @ 2.1mhz QL chipset. my question are:

1) Is Nividia Beta 185.20 driver be use on my 9100m nvidia GPU?

I have notice 2 weird problem with this lappy:
1) When pluging inexternal speaker or headphone i always have the annoying message from the sound manager saying the device is unplug from the headphone jack and then as soon as it says that it says again that a device is been plug in to the headphone jack. The thing is i did not unplug it at all and the sound are still coming out from the external speaker only once that it goes to lappy speaker then to external speaker again. I notice that it happen most often or mostly when im in the POWER SAVER power profile. did not notice it when im in HIGH POWER profile. Is something wrong with my headphone jack?

2) the 5 rubber leg below the laptop... the one below my left hand palm rest did not touch the table or a flat surface. i tried it on many flat surface but it just wont touch base for that area. the rubber are new and not wear off. Is the plastic wrap up? i notice it on the 3rd day i bought it and i did not run it for long hours just 2 hours in one session and its not hot compare to my previous lappy.

Anyone have similar issue as me? oh most importantly of this post is to find out if the 185.20 driver good for my lappy and 9100m GPU.

thanks in advance

Stonely said...

Ok i juz check at the Nvidia website it seems that the 185.20 driver are develope for Desktop GPU. i search and could not find and test officially done on a laptop GPU can you confirm this?

Weinter said...

1)
Yes you can use Nvidia Driver 185.20.
But you need to enable PowerMizer for the registry. Check the blog entry for details.
Actually Desktop GPU uses the same chip as Notebook GPU except Notebook Drivers come with PowerMizer enabled by Default and you can also enable PowerMizer on Desktop GPU in Windows Registry.
2)
The annoying popup is the pop up notifcation.
Disable it using Windows Tweaker using the Windows Tweaker Blog entry.
You might also want to update the Realtek Audio Driver to the latest version 2.21 using the Realtek Driver Blog entry.
3)
If your laptop is hot even while in idle mode you might want to download the Acer Fan Control (refer to the Acer Fan Control Blog) and decrease the temperature to start the fan.
Also check you have installed AMD Processor Driver and Dual Core Optimizer if you are using Windows Xp only.

Weinter said...

Sorry I meant to say you can enable PowerMizer in all current Nvidia Drivers.

Stonely said...

my acer 4530 bluetooth button does not work when press button also i cant on the bluetooth device. but when i restart the system and when os lord bluetooth device also lord but when it open it does not work

Weinter said...

You have to check if your Aspire 4530 comes with Bluetooth.
From what I heard some Aspire 4530 doesn't come with it.
DMaster has suceeded in installing Bluetooth in his Aspire 4530, you might want to consult him on further instruction to dismantle your Aspire 4530 to locate the Bluetooth Port.

Hi can you help me? my microphone level don't seems to be able to stay at 100% in Sound manager. whenever i set it to 100% when im using Webcam in MSN the mic level will drop and i go to sound manager again its no longer in 100%. What's wrong here:(

Weinter said...

There are 3 places to set Mic Levels.
1)MSN itself
2)Control Panel>>Sound>>Recording
3)Realtek Device Manager
Try setting it in all three.

Can you try using HWMonitor to check the temperature throughout your usage?
It is important to find which is the component that generate the heat.
It can be due to the GPU as well.
If your temperature really is high it is not surprising the battery life dies.
High heat kills battery life.
If it is really a design fault, I strongly recommend you to go down to the HP support centre to sort things out, once you are there they will have to resolve your issue.
Meanwhile you can use power plan to reduce the CPU frequency processor using lower processing state.
I think you should really blame HP poor thermal design instead of AMD because there are Acer Aspire Laptops using the exact same AMD Processor with no overheating issues.

Also google and run GPUZ to ensure the GPU is not at 100% all the time.

In conclusion
1)Download HWMonitor, Check what is causing the temperature
Print out the table
2)Download GPUZ, Check the GPU Clock
Make sure the GPU Clock is low at idle
Print out the table
3)Meanwhile reduce the CPU Frequency using this guide here (Temporary Measure).
Reducing the frequency,will reduce temperature.
Do not accept this as a solution, as you paid for the full capabilities of the laptop.
4)With the data go to HP support centre and confront them.
They can't deny it with the data staring in their faces
If they insist on demo do it using HWMonitor.
Remember to get fix/replacement for the laptop & the battery because it is indirectly cause by them.

Problem caused by a hard disk drive error

Windows was temporarily unable to read your hard disk drive. We do not know the exact cause of the problem. In most cases, this type of condition is momentary and does not indicate a serious problem, but sometimes it means that a hard disk is failing.

Common causes of this problem

Aging or failing hard disks. To prevent file corruption and data loss, we recommend that you back up all of your important files and folders immediately. See Step 1 in the Troubleshooting section below for more information.

Large file transfers from secondary media, such as an external hard drive, to a local hard drive.

Loss of power to a hard disk drive that causes inconsistent data sectors.

Hard drive slowness caused by disk-intensive processes such as antivirus scanners.

Recently installed hardware that might have compatibility and performance problems.

Tis is wat the window's telling me after i restart from BSOD

Weinter said...

Kenny you might want to scan your harddisk for errors.
Use HDTune to scan for errors on harddisk.
I suspect bad sectors has developed hence Windows crash when it tries to read the bad sectors.
What is the brand of the harddisk btw?

Weinter said...

For the 9600GT check the temperatures using HWMonitor when gaming.
Make sure it doesn't spike too high.
Also the standard game tweaks is update drivers use the latest 185.81 WHQL on Nvidia US site.
Update DirectX from Microsoft.

Kenny said...

I think mine is western digital...my fren said it might be the work of a virus

Kenny said...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/Reidx/HDTune_Error_Scan_WDC_WD1600BEVT-22.png

Here's the link of my scan results of the WD hard disk..seems no bad sectors...so wat seems to be the problem?

Weinter said...

Shouldn't be, as Windows reported a harddisk read error.
Malware can't cause that.
Don't worry bad sectors is a natural occurance over time.
Just use the Western Digital Boot disk utility (Downloadable) scan the harddisk to add the bad sector to the G-List.
It will replace the bad sector with a free sector.

Weinter said...

How about trying Scandisk.
Open Command Prompt with Admin Rights
Type "chkdsk" & enter

Weinter said...

If it still shows no error, try to delete the folder which Windows stated caused the error

ehmsas.exe 4016
NMIndexStoreSvr.exe 1964
StarWindServiceAE.exe 2072
DkService.exe 308
BoostSpeed.exe 3944
The following Services are "extra"
Also why do you have 2 different disk optimizer running?
BoostSpeed.exe 3944 from Auslogic
DkService.exe 308 from Diskkeeper
It is maybe possible that they conflict resulting in BSOD.

Weinter said...

Try removing the services from startup
By Run "msconfig"
uncheck them see if it helps.

Basically the crash dump id the problem as a Vista Driver Problem.

Kenny said...

Did a memory test..no problem found.Vista Driver problem?Y would i had tat?o.O Any solutions?

Weinter said...

Try uninstalling all drivers then reinstall them again.
The crash dump didn't specify the device error.
Maybe you didn't do a clean install(Uninstall Restart Install Restart) of one of the drivers.

Hello,

i recently change my acer aspire 4730z 64 bit vista ultimate to 32 bit, everything is fine except it cannot find the cd-dvd drive. Even in MY COMPUTER there is no cd-dvd drive. i already installed the latest drivers... in my Device Manager there is one device that have no driver.. it shows Network Controller is this maybe the cd-dvd drive? Please help

Weinter said...

No the CD ROM Drive should be under DVD/CD-ROM drives
Check if the BIOS detects the CD-ROM drive successfully.
Press and hold F2 on boot then see if the CD-ROM drive is detected under boot drive priority.
If it does you probably missed out some drivers.
I think you didn't install all the drivers to have unidentified driver.
Go http://aspiregemstone.blogspot.com/2009/05/good-place-to-get-acer-drivers.html
And download and install the drivers.
Make sure the mainboard driver is installed as well.
Make sure only one driver for each component is installed.
If nothing works try BIOS update

hi there,
i got some problems with my aspire 4520.

3 days before i spilled some water on my laptop and i shut it down immediately. i get the water out and let it dry for half day. then turn it on and it works nicely for 2 hours then after that it start to hv problem on the screen and cannot do anything.

i shut it down manually and try again but the same thing happens after 30 minutes. the third time i try it wont boot to bios.

i thought that the board had problems with the spilled water so i disassemble all the parts, let it dry for 2 days put it back together again as before but the same thing happen - the laptop display nothing and i can only hear cpu fan, DVD rom spinning and see the led flashing only for a while. then it silence but the power button is on and my cpu temperature rise.

what is the real problem and how can i fix it?

(AMD turion 64x2
nvidia geforce 7000M
2GB RAM DDR2
)

Weinter said...

First did the water get on the LCD?
Try external VGA plug the laptop into an external monitor to check if it is the LCD.
If it is not try swapping out the memory modules and harddisk.
If it still doesn't work it is probably the motherboard which you can only do a replacement but it very expensive.
Keyboard spills leaving to dry for half a day is probably not enough as there are areas that collect water.
If you spill water often consider a Thinkpad with spill proof keyboard.

I suppose none of the existing 2009 models of AMD mobile CPUs support nested paging for virtualization? That seems to give a huge speedup when running virtualbox guests...
AMD 7750 Kuma seems to support it, probably being to least expensive CPU to do it.

Weinter said...

I think they do.
An AMD Whitepaper dated 2008 stated that RVI (Rapid Virtualisation Indexing) also known as nested paging for virtualization is part of AMD-V.

upgraded to nvidia 186.81 forceware recently. Anyway u mind providing ur desktop color settings? Like those contrast / brightness / gamma? And on video settings those hue / saturation etc?

Cuz i cant seem to able to get a good colour settings. Sometime it seems ok for my games (dota) yet it looks abit yellowish on the homepage.

thx alot.

I used the default.
I did not notice anything yellowish or anything maybe my eyes ain't sharp enough.
Maybe you might want to install 186.91 since it is WHQL certified as well.

and using the original acer aspire 4530 laptop display?

I find default alright except for certain webpage looks kinda "yellowish white" lol. Its not that yellow, but kinda an eye sore.

hi weinter, what a nice blogs u have here.
im using aspire 4935 for a year now.
started to develop some problem.
the first is my acer crystal eye program doesnt detect any webcam.
the second problem,i cant charge my battery without switching off my laptop first.

Weinter said...

You could be having the same problem as the Aspire 4530.
The driver installed by default is the Suyin Driver but it could be the wrong driver for the wrong hardware hence there are issues detecting it. Try going to Acer Support Page, uninstall the Suyin Driver and install the Bison WebCam driver.
As for the power issues, it could be the BIOS, try flashing the latest BIOS released in May from the Acer Support Download Page.

When flashing BIOS please follow the instruction onscreen carefully.

Sir weinter, i have this lappy 4530, my question is, is the heatsink installed in this system inefficient or is it that turions are notoriously hot? also my webcam doesn't work in windows 7 x64 ultimate, rtm version, i tried using bison, instead of that suyin, i tried also the tips you gave in your blog, but nothing seems to work. it used to work in windows vista though.

Weinter said...

The heatsink is a bit small plus Turion are rather hot.
Have you tried Win7 32bit?
At the moment it is most important to know it is a hardware or software issue.
If it still doesn't fix it a dissemble could be require, the guide is available here as well

Ardene said...

thanks for the quick reply, I'm a bit concerned of the temps reaching 85C both cpu/gpu while gaming, will that fry the chips during sustained gaming, i.e., 2 or more hours? And one more thing, my 4530 has 4gb ram, will win7 32-bit be able to utilize all that ram?(because of that webcam issue, i wanna try 32-bit)..thanks for the tips, you have a nice blog..

Ardene said...

i also tried your tip in disassembling the upper part of the lappy(where the wires for the webcam is located), there's nothing loose, and I also tried giving the webcam wire some leeway so that it won't be constrained during opening/closing of the lid. Quite pretty sure it's a software problem, coz it was still working when i was still using win vista x64 ultimate.

Weinter said...

Actual temperature limits for Turion is 110 Deg.
32bit will only utilise 2.75GB due to address space limitation.
You can also try installing the webcam driver using Vista SP2 Compatibility Mode (Right Click Properties Compatibility Mode).
This is also the reason I remain using 32bit Mode because the 64bit Drivers are still not ready.

Ardene said...

Ok, so I think I'll just have to bear being without webcam than to go back to vista or win 7 32-bit..Can this lappy support 500gb hard disk?

Weinter said...

Any 2.5" Notebook Harddisk is supported.
Recently I replaced my 320GB WD BEVT with a 320GB BEKT.
It has 7200RPM compared to 5400RPM and 16MB compared to 8MB buffer Cache. Comes with a 5 year warranty instead of 3.
When buying harddisk consider the cost per gigabyte to make a decision you won't regret.

Ardene said...

That's nice, its faster too..But you can only upgrade the hard disk after the warranty period of the lappy, right?

James said...

Hey there weinter,

recently i installed window 7 32-bits ultimate onto my acer aspire 4530 and also installed the Latest WHQL Nvidia Driver NVIDIA Forceware 186.91.

Despite the facts that both installation went smoothly, but everytime during startup (or re-logon), the window software installation (dinotify.exe) keeps telling me that my nvidia geforce 9100m installed successfully.

I have attached an image here, about the "window software installation"

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3420/windowsoftwareinstallat.jpg

That alert just kept appearing everytime i startup or relogon to windows. No matter i clicked the "close" or "X button" It just kept showing.

Kinda irritating i felt. So is there anyway to solve it? Thanks.

NUR said...

hello weinter,i already flashing a new bios, but still not working.
actually its not that i cant charge my battery, but i cant direct use my ac adapter only without the battery to on the laptop.

Weinter said...

@Ardene
Yep to be safe not to void the warranty do it after it is over.
@James
An uninstall(if done from device manager check delete driver, or you can do it from Program & Features Nvidia Drivers safer to use Nvidia uninstaller) , restart then reinstall ought to do the trick.
@NUR
Can you elaborate on the whole issue I still can't understand the actual issue.

NUR said...

sorry,my problem is i cant switch on my laptop if using direct power supply through ac adapter only without the battery.

Weinter said...

First Try hard resetting the laptop
If it still doesn't work if under warranty you might have to send it back if you can't live with it.
There might be loose connections in the laptop.

Not possible.
There is no PCI-E MXM slot for extra graphics Card not to mention it is too cramp to put anything inside.
So you have to stick with it or buy a new laptop.

Hello Weinter. I have a extensa 4420 with a amd tk-57. What are some of the faster proc. that can be used with my machine? I was looking at the tl-66 or the tl-68.
I know this is a aspire gemstone blog but maybe they are somewhat the same if not if you could point me in the right direction.

Admin said...

No worries any computer issues is worth bringing up doesn't have to be Gemstone Series of Laptops
I would expect any TL series to work.
Like the TK series TL Series uses the same socket: S1G1.
Difference is TK series has less L2 Cache than TL Series.
CPU architecture wise should be identical and CPU support should work since they are of the same architecture.
The best you can have is TL-68.
Given that prices of S1G1 Processor have fallen due to S1G2 and S1G3 Processor introduction hence it should be a good time to upgrade without burning a hole in the pocket.

hey weinter,

i have 2 questions here.

First, acer has uploaded the chipset driver for aspire 4530 win7 ulti x86
"Chipset Driver 15.42" and according to ur blog, u recommend the latest chipset 15.45. So which of the 2 is more stable / better?

Secondly, after i installed acer bluetooth driver, my window explorer crashes whenever i access my handphone's folder in C:\ which is connected by bluetooth (obex connection). It used to work properly in window vista. But when changed to win 7 the folders is missing. When installed the new driver, explorer crashes whenever i try accessing the phone's folder

So thanks greatly

Admin said...

Reinstall the bluetooth driver from Acer Website.
The problem with Chipset driver is you need PCI Management driver which is not available on what Acer released 15.42 so go for the 15.45 driver which has that driver.

Anonymous said...

thanks. the bluetooth works fine now. As for the chipset, ok i shall stick to the 15.45.

Anonymous said...

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire 4730z, which works fine except its fan comes on every 10-20 seconds in about 10 second bursts and is quite noisy. Very annoying.

I sent it into Acer's repair facility twice. Both times they said they could not replicate the problem although it is quite an obvious problem for everyone who has used the computer, but the second time they replaced the fan anyways. Didn't help at all.

Any suggestions/ advice for what is going on would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Admin said...

There are a few solutions
1)Replace with a better quality thermal grease. I recommend Arctic Cooling MX-2. Hopefully it will reduce the temperature and fan will spin up less
2)Undervolt the CPU using RMClock
3)Add Copper Blocks to reduce CPU Temperature.

Hi, about running acer 4530 on battery, we all know that acer 4530 cant run long on batt lol. At most a 2hours only.

So i have some enquiries here...

1. Turn off hardisk - Yes/No?
Some say turning off hardisk is bad for it, some say it is powersaving and good...

2. PCI Managment - Link State power management. What is this exactly? Should i set it to max power saving, moderate power saving or never?

3. Any other tips to share? Im entering college soon so i hope my this old laptop can at least survive through my lecture lol.

Admin said...

1)Turn off harddisk is ok if you are not using it.
2)Link state management set to max when on battery
3)Force the CPU to run at 60 percent on battery.
Undervolt the GPU using my custom BIOS.

Richard said...

My apologies not clear on what you are referring to by HWMonitor Screenshot? Could you please clarify, thanks.

Admin said...

Download the software HWMonitor and run the software to display temperatures.

hey weinter I have a problem with my graphics driver... We have the same acer 4530 laptop.. and the only driver that works for me is the driver from acer.com.ph which has a version of 175.61.... when I try to instal 196.81 and 195.62 it says :"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."
BTW: before i install my drivers i uninstall them first then use ccleaner.. i don't know what to do now...

using windows 7 ultimate
michael lao

Admin said...

I suggest that you should uninstall the drivers then run CCleaner (use the portable edition if you don't want to install it).
Use the CCleaner to remove all Windows Registry traces of the Nvidia driver.
Next restart and install the driver 195.62.

Admin said...

If it still doesn't work backup then reformat and reinstall.
How did you install Win7 btw?

Michael Lao said...

I downloaded windows 74 64 bit in isohunt.com.. I have used hash checker to check the the file is not modified....

then I activate Windows 7 using windows loader 1.77..

I have installed the driver 195.62 before (in IDE mode).. but when I reformatted again in (AHCI mode) it cannot be installed)

My bios has not been modified in anyway because I'm afraid that it might screw up...

Should I use windows 7 in ide mode??
what are the advantages of ahci? i have read articles about it.. but its not clear..

Thank you

Michael Lao

Admin said...

Please do not use a loader.
I have already created modified BIOS for Aspire 4530 that has the capability to activate Windows 7 cleanly without modification of system files.
Check my entry on modified BIOS and download the activator and BIOS files to create a DOS Boot Disk to safely flash the BIOS.
Be sure to read the read me and don't forget to reformat as well.

Admin said...

Take note I also have modified BIOS with undervolted GPU and corrected DSDT with SLIC 2.1 that you might be interested in.

Michael Lao said...

ah ok.. i'll try to flash my bios.. is it safe?? what if something went wrong. will my laptop be useless?? or is there a way to recover my bios?? is there a step by step guide about this?? thank you..

Michael Lao said...

I have read your article about the modified bios.. I'm confused what bios to use because you have uploaded 2 .wph.. one with the new updates(undervolted) and the 1st one.. is there a step by step guide? can you give me the link.. thanks..

Michael Lao

Admin said...

@Michael
SLIC 2.1 is the component I added to activate Windows 7 hence both BIOS can activate Windows 7 however the one with Undervolting is for reducing power used for GPU and less heat produced.
There is also a emergency phoenix BIOS recovery guide in case you didn't flash properly.
All the instruction is in the activator.zip file.
Download and read.

Hi there,

Im not sure if u play dota / warcraft but i have a question here. My FPS (frame rate) for dota in warcraft III is pretty bad (around 20-30) when i play it on this acer aspire 4530 laptop.

i believe our spec is similar...

- AMD Turion x2 2.2GHz
- 4 GB Ram (32 bit system though, so only 2.8ram used)
- windows 7
- nvidia 9100m with latest update (195. something i think)

for such a decent spec i wonder y my dota fps is still worse than my previous laptop such as

1.8GHz, 1GB Ram, nvidia geforce 6100 i think... which can play constantly at 50-60 FPS

Admin said...

Did you run HWMonitor when gaming?
What is the temperature like?
If it is overheating either you do some hardware modification to lower the temperature or you turn up the fan.
Check my Acer Aspire Fan Control Blog entry.

Gamer said...

Temp was around 80+/- for both Cores.

Is this considered overheating? I have played higher-end games on this laptop like red alert 3. (Temp went up to 95) but there wasnt much FPS drop compared to dota (which is an old game)

Admin said...

1)DirectX updated?
2)Drivers updated?

Gamer said...

- DirectX 11
- nvidia card 195.62

both alright i guess? Is there a place to update directx strictly?

Admin said...

Go to Microsoft Website and download and run DirectX Runtime.

Admin said...

Also if you have a lot of unnessary software process running in the background removing them will help as well.

gamer said...

dint have much processor running in the background. Simply window live messenger, avast, K10stat.

anyway if nvidia powermizer is activated will it cause my graphic card to run poorly?

Gamer said...

once again thx for ur help, but i couldnt find the exact directx 11 installation file for download @ microsoft. The nearest i could find is this http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

I have found other "directx 11" file from some external link hosted by others. But due to safety reason i dun dare to download it.

Admin said...

DirectX Runtime is correct just try and see if this works.

Admin said...

PowerMizer will push up the GPU Clock when your computer needs the power.

gamer said...

updated the directx 11, still dint work well...

FPS still drops to 20-30 during intense battle.

It seems to be problem regarding my nvidia card settings. For example, i set my advaned 3D image settings to "performance"

and as for desktop color settings, should i "nvidia settings" or "other applications control color settings"?

Admin said...

How about resetting the graphics options to default?
Make sure it is set to Application Controlled.

gamer said...

Hi there,

sorry for disturbing lol, through browsing the web for tweaks and ways to solve... so far these 2 worked for me.

1. Run compatibility of warcraft III frozen throne as "Windows 98/ ME"

But why 98/ME? i thought war3 was designed for windows xp instead. (so should have ran in xp compatiblity)

2. Run warcraft III only on one core. Either manually set affinity of war3 to only 1 of the dual core or use imagecfg.exe to pernamently set it to use one core.

However, i thought this was only the problem of vista & the problem with amd dual core optimiser... im using windows 7 shouldnt be much problem i thought?

So instead of 20-30 fps, im able to get 40-50 during intense battle. and about 50+/- on non-intense. which is rather good. But still cant achieve a constant 60 as per my old laptop...

Admin said...

How about setting both Cores to ganged using K10Stat?

gamer said...

sorry for not replying for so long, but how do i do that?

John said...

Hi there,

im using aspire 4530 x86 vista home premium and have activated windows 7 ultimate according to your methods stated in this blog.

Right now, windows update is offering to install Kb971033 which says briefly "windows activation technologies detects activation exploits and tampering to key windows system files" So will it affect my already "Activated" wins 7?

Thanks

Hi, i found another crazy stuff laptop cooling. Rather than just change the original thermal paste, put a layer of copper between GPU surface and GPU Thermal Cooling Pad..

Is it effective??

The Copper Piece is suppose to replace the thermal pad.
Basically thermal pad is a poor heat conductor hence it should be replaced.

i use acer 4530 and when i boot my windows (xp)
my laptop stays on the windows logo for very long time. about 4-5 minutes and once it get past that thing and starting to get into windows it takes like 30 sec to 1 min to load than im in windows, once i get into windows everything is fast.

what u think is causing the slow boot at windows logo? (windows logo i mean right after the screen where i can press F2 to get into bios)
u think is hardware or software?
any help is appreciated.

Admin said...

Could be your software ie (Malware or excessive software running on startup)
On the blog there is a modified BIOS that can activate Windows 7 in a genuine manner that will work just like OEM Laptops sold in stores. Find it it, flash it and install Windows 7 following the activation instruction carefully.
If you spend the effort to find out you will be rewarded.
Good Luck.

I don't know if you are comfortable with opening up but it should solve your problem. Here is a Service Guide to help you dissemble it.
Buy some good thermal paste and Rubbing Alcohol, remove the old paste and reapply a new thin layer over the CPU. If the heatsink is very oxidised you can google on how to use brasso to remove the oxide layer for better thermal conductivity.

(by the way hidden partitions shows healthy status).
still i can see halfway installed vista in windows's list at start up with advance booting options available, but not accessable to proceed with . (it says the same : "u need to restart system to conintue in windows") .

Boot from GPart Linux and change it back.
@iamwaiting
Your GPU is damaged that is why it cannot render 3D acceleration mode after drivers are installed.
You have to get a new computer unless you know how to desolder the GPU to swap it.

Just purchased a WR1043ND, just to install OpenWRT. Have been planing to do so since a year, but according to the OpenWRT wiki, the routers shipped after August may have the newer bootloader and firmware, so I'm a bit confused about installing OpenWRT. I want to have some daemons running like Transmission, PyLoad, Sickbeard etc. And curl to perform tasks through scripts like to reboot the router, modem, and maybe the NAS.

Do you use a DLINK NAS, i could use some help with that as well :)

Hey I finally installed OpenWRT, got it running. Using Transmission. Its working fine, but stalls a couple of times when the ram usage gets too high, coz it generally takes around 32% of the ram

I am planning on doing a RAM change, for the 64MB chip... once i locate the chip from somewhere. any other compatible chips? other than the ones listed at the wiki page?

Also I have to keep Restarting the router or the tranmission software once transmission crashes, So i wondered if you could help me to set up the QSS button to start and stop tranmsmision and use the QSS LED to see when its on.

The closest script i could find to what i wanted is this

If you deleted the factory partition then there is nothing you can do except try Windows Vista OEM Activation.
If you still have the factory partition then set it to primary boot partition using gpart or any disk management tool which has the function.
